The tech world requires almost constant learning – there are always new technologies, language updates, and sector-specific knowledge to acquire, regardless of whether you are new to the industry or have been in it for many years.  

It is almost inevitable you will eventually turn to an online course as a tool to upskill in pursuit of breaking into the industry, career advancement, or the simple desire to learn and build. They are great, affordable, and often free, learning resources that can give you the foundation to use these new skills and extend them more easily through experience and further research.  

To gain the most value from your course, follow these three tips: 

Find a course that teaches theory and practical content

The combination of theory and practical knowledge is powerful. Learning both gives you the skills to execute, but also the depth of knowledge to understand why something works and, importantly, figure out how to solve more complex problems using that underlying knowledge. 

Look for courses that have explanations of topics and then dive into project work. Courses that have projects to complete that can go onto your portfolio are a double win that you should seek out.  

Practicing along is crucial to absorbing the knowledge and being able to independently create using that knowledge. Just watching is often not enough to cement what you learned in your brain in a meaningful way.

Build high quality notes

While you learn and practice along with your course, take the opportunity to build your own “Wikipedia” as a memorisation technique and an ongoing resource to take away with you. 

Studies show taking notes helps improve your memory of new topics. By putting concepts into your own words and spending thinking time digesting your learning, you can better recall what you have learned. 

You can later refer to your personal “Wikipedia” to refresh your memory on concepts or techniques. As you continue to learn from other sources and experience, your “Wikipedia” can continue to grow as a comprehensive guide.  

Check out tools like Notion.io and OneNote to take digital notes that are cloud connected so can be accessed and edited from anywhere. Notion is handy for its structuring elements, templates, and special programmatically updatable elements. OneNote benefits from the ability to handwrite notes using a pen or touch screen, along with integration with other Microsoft products.

Share your progress

Sharing your progress is motivated by three things – building in accountability, finding community, and boosting your visibility in industry. 

Putting your goals out into the world can build in accountability to your process. If you are doing a coding course, many people do the 100 Days of Code challenge (there are also 30 and 50 day challenges). As part of the challenge, you are supposed to share your daily progress. It gives people a way to celebrate their daily wins and meet like-minded people.

There are a loads of tech communities online that are passionate and interested in the same things you are. Connecting with them with help you find resources to learn from and hear about the latest changes in the industry. They also help establish a feeling of belonging for those who may be new to the space.

Internships are gamechangers! Regardless of your path into tech – university, bootcamp, and/or self-taught – internships are an immensely valuable opportunity to get a soft landing into the industry and professional working. Plus, there’s a pretty general consensus that you learn more on the job than in formal studies, so expect to walk away with lots of new skills.

One of the best rewards is that internships often lead to grad roles – in many ways they can be considered an extended interview. I consider them to often be the easiest way to get into a Big Tech company as they hire for potential.

That being said, here are some tips for prepping for and landing an internship:

Pay attention to application timelines

One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to get an internship is missing the application deadlines! Or even if they make the official deadline, roles are often filled on a rolling bases – meaning they interview sooner than the final deadline – so there are still no open spaces left by the time you apply.   

The easiest way to combat this is to follow a timeline that lines you up to apply as soon as applications open. The timeline below does just that:  

Summer – 1 Year Before Internship: Yes, you want to start a year in advance! This is when you should do your groundwork. Research the companies you want to apply to, create/update your CV and start building relationships with those who can help you. The key is to stay organized – track each application in a document eg. Excel.

Autumn – 9 Months Before Internship: Internship applications open at the start of the university year around September-October. You want to apply as soon as you can – of course, taking time to complete the application thoughtfully.

Winter – 6 Months Before Internship: Many internship applications close around December. Ideally by now you will have received an offer. If that is not the case, then no worries because there are still options. Keep applying, attend career events, and be sure to tailor your CV to each application. 

For those attending universities with a placement year, you may be able to do up to 15 months work experience. If you start a 12-month internship in June, then you can squeeze in another internship before the next university year starts. That gives you double the chances for a grad offer, a bigger network, and, of course, more experience.

You don't need to know everything!

For full-time roles, you don’t need to know everything on the job spec to apply – that is even more true for internships! Companies expect to train you. In fact, training you is part of the career development given by your colleagues.

All you need is the confidence to believe that regardless of what the challenge is, you will be able to learn what you need and complete the task. There is always help on the team! Ultimately, just don’t let “imposter syndrome” hold you back from applying to an internship.

Seek out external advice and career services

A second pair of eyes is always helpful! At the most basic level, have someone else read and provide feedback on your CV. On a deeper level, seek out formal career services to help you prep- universities usually provide these services for free.

In particular, informational sessions on phone, video or 1:1, as well as assessment centre interviews can all teach you about the structure of that style of interview, what interviewers are looking for, and tips on how to be successful. This additional training helps you be more confident, relaxed, and ultimately more prepared for the real interview which translates well to your interviewer.

Understand what work you will actually be doing

During conversations with the recruiters and interviewers on the team you are applying to, be sure to ask for details on what the role entails. Other options are to speak to past interns and read reviews on sites like Glassdoor.

Your network can open doors

The saying “your network is your net worth” has some truth to it! Your network can help get your foot in the door and elevate your application. While it likely won’t get you the job outright (and it shouldn’t), it may mean you can skip some interview steps and raise your application’s visibility.

The key stakeholders you want to connect with are the recruiters, team members, and most importantly the hiring manager (they are the final decision maker). Think about who in your network you can pull on to connect you to one of these people or refer you for an open role – use every “in” you can!

If you don’t have a super strong network yet, events run by recruiters are a great way to get an “in” if you don’t have one in your network. Connect with company recruiters on LinkedIn to watch out for information events on internships. They review the CVs of those who attend these events and will boost your application, particularly if you are engaging, ask questions, and make yourself known. You can also reach out to key stakeholders directly on LinkedIn if you want to make your name known – express your interest and share what you can bring to the team.

Technology is pervasive – it’s influenced commerce, social interaction, entertainment, medicine, city planning, transportation… the list goes on. Plus, it seemingly knows more about us than we do ourselves. Every industry on the planet has been impacted by technology in one way or another.    

The importance of technology created with everyone in mind becomes increases as its influence on people and the planet continues to grow. If we are to build technology that is conscious of different people’s needs, abilities, and cultures, then we need teams with people who come from different backgrounds and experiences.    

When it comes to establishing these teams, it’s not just about creating them – it’s also about how we foster an environment where everyone can thrive.    

There is a great phrase coined by Vema Myers that perfectly illustrates the point:   

“Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance.” 

 Here are 6 ways you can be part of the change to make tech more diverse and inclusive:

Promoting Diversity

We need to be dismantling barriers and supporting the development of underrepresented communities along the entire education and career pipeline. Every Day Inclusivity

Diving into the tech industry can feel a bit overwhelming at times. The vast expansion of the tech industry in recent years and the historical lack of diversity means not enough people are getting the information and mentorship they need to make strategic choices about getting into tech. Let’s change that by giving you a basic framework to focus your efforts and land you a role you will thrive in! 

Working Backwards

The joy of tech is that it impacts basically every industry, in every part of the world. You want to find the intersections between what you love and your work. Finding the intersections helps boost your motivation, increases how quickly you learn, and ultimately leads to finding greater success. Allow yourself to think boldly – anything is possible!   

The first place to start when finding your tech pathway is by looking at what you truly want to do and working backwards!

Ask yourself questions like:  

  • What am I passionate about? 

  • What are my strengths? Consider both technical + professional skills (eg. Communication + collaboration). 

  • What impact do I want to make? 

  • What products or companies align with my goals and/or passions?

With a better idea of what you want to do, it’s now time for a bit of research:   

Take a look at Job Postings:
Look for ones at the companies that speak to your mission or are building the tech that you want to work on. This is the clearest indicator of what skills you should be gaining. However, don’t let job descriptions prevent you from applying to certain roles if you don’t have all the skills – not everything is a must-have to land the job. 

Use Online Social Platforms:
Find people on LinkedIn, Twitter, and/or reach out to people in your network who are doing similar things to what you want to do. Look at their journey and focus on the skills they learnt that led them to where they are now. Make note of the things that stand out to you. 

And that’s it – a data-driven, personalized process to inform what skills and experiences to gain to reach the life that YOU want. By planning backwards, your moves are more strategic, and you can feel confident that you’re always heading in the right direction.

With this in mind, you now know what to learn, but the question remains how should you learn it? Again, your choice depends on what works best for you. Tech is a special industry because it does not require you to follow a certain educational path to gain the necessary skills. This means you can choose your path based on how you learn best and your individual life + financial circumstances. Let’s go over some of the common educational paths: 

University

With this in mind, you now know what to learn, but the question remains how should you learn it? Again, your choice depends on what works best for you. Tech is a special industry because it does not require you to follow a certain educational path to gain the necessary skills. This means you can choose your path based on how you learn best and your individual life + financial circumstances. Let’s go over some of the common educational paths: 

Apprenticeships

These are quickly becoming a popular approach and one of the best ways to get the best of all the different paths into tech. You will learn on-the-job (so is ideal for people who don’t enjoy a traditional classroom learning environment), get paid for your work, and, depending on the apprenticeship scheme, earn your degree with a partner university absolutely FREE! Plus, you will likely get a post-apprenticeship job offer. Apprenticeships that include completing your degree are generally as long, or possibly longer than a traditional 4-year degree, but you end up with multiple years’ experience and no debt. I highly recommend looking into apprenticeships if the university path doesn’t appeal to you.

Bootcamps

This is a much shorter, highly focused learning path that will teach you the fundemental skills you need to get a job in tech. Many bootcamps focus on a particular tech stack (eg. web development or data science), so you will not get as much technical breadth as a university degree, but you will complete it in a fraction of the time. Good bootcamps will teach a mix of theoretical and practical content, will require you to create projects to demonstrate your skills and have something to put on your GitHub . They will also provide career resources to help you get a job after completing the course, and have clear metrics on how successfully their students went from doing their bootcamp to having a job in the relevant industry. Bootcamps are fairly pricey – they can easily be several thousand pounds, but there are often scholarships available for those needing financial aid or if you are part of an underrepresented community in tech.

Self-Teaching

Regardless of if you are trying to get into tech or are already in it, you will have to self-teach at some point to stay on top of the latest changes in the industry. This path requires the most amount of self-motivation and drive. You are solely responsible for your learning and how quickly it takes. However, you also have the flexibility to learn whatever you want at a far lower price than through a university or bootcamp. This is generally the hardest path with which to get into an entry level role but is entirely possible and is quickly becoming a common path as tech resources become more widely available and the need for technical people continues to rapidly increase.

The choice is yours! Getting into tech does not require following a single path. You can choose the path that best aligns with you and your circumstances.

Releasing my first product to the public was, to put it into Xbox terms, an “Achievement Unlocked” moment. During my first internship at Microsoft on Paint 3D, I worked on the project from prototype to release.

It was a very unique year and an opportunity that interns don’t often get.

Since then, I have released features for the Xbox app, developed the new Cortana in Windows app, created new components for the Edge browser new tab page, and am currently working on a project set to be used by millions daily.

I’ve learnt a lot about user feedback, building + shipping products, working within a big corporate, the evolution of products, and even about myself.

Here are the top 5 things I’ve learnt developing software:

About Development

Engage User Research and pivot based on user feedback. A developer, designer, and project/product manager are going to get tunnel vision. They are going to know the quirks of the project and come with bias on how easy it is to use and the value it is providing.

Get your product in front of real people – you’ll likely find it wasn’t as intuitive as you thought. Use this feedback to make a product people want to use.

About Building Projects

Being critical of your product or company isn’t a bad thing when it is constructive. I drank the Microsoft Kool-Aid from a very young age and my passion for its products led me to my role as a software engineer.

Growing up, I struggled to say anything negative about Microsoft – it felt disloyal. When I joined my first Microsoft team, I was shocked at how critical the team was of everything.

I’d soon learn it was their superpower.

They didn’t get stuck in the corporate bubble of “we make the best products”. They came from a mix of companies so could say “this isn’t great” and “here’s how we can do better”. They were obsessed with building a product people loved to use. Calling out what was bad and being entirely customer focused was how they kept quality up.

It worked! Press attention was enormously positive and now Paint 3D has a really loyal base of users. Use a constructively critical eye on your product – it will be better off because of it.

About Working in a Big Corporate

Plan for a long-term vision and build the minimum lovable product (MLP) – not the minimum viable product (MVP).

A minimum viable product is generally understood to be the version of the product that has the minimum number of features to solve their problem – the golden path through your main user journey.

A minimum lovable product is similar to an MVP, but it goes beyond just solving the customers’ problem. A MLP has greater consideration for the look, feel, and delight of the user’s experience when using your product.

Building the MLP helps your first-round product hit the shelves, delighting users as well as building external and internal buy in for the next set of updates.

Long-term visions can be hard to achieve when leads, particularly in large corporates, change roles – bringing new agendas and shifts in company direction. This will help bring longevity amongst change to your project by building a quality product where the metrics speak volumes.

Invest in your telemetry and data pipeline. Data will help drive important decisions about product focus, assist in product health improvements, and demonstrates quantitatively that you are reaching your key performance metrics (KPIs).

About the Evolution of Products

Not all software is released or sticks around forever. As hard as it is to see something you built not survive the test of time, your contributions can still be very valuable. These products help prove a concept, inform future decisions, or may be repurposed into something new.

A great example is the innovative Microsoft Kinect, which shipped with the Xbox 360. The Kinect enabled users to play games with their whole body thanks to advanced motion and room tracking.

Unfortunately, the Kinect didn’t get the public buy in it needed to be continued at scale. However, its technology was later transformed into the HoloLens.

The HoloLens is a world-leading MR headset that companies and individuals use around the world. The technology wasn’t lost – it was repurposed into something even better. Plus, the Kinect itself is still quite popular with developers for AI/ML projects and research

Over the week, I learnt about their unique stories, passions and goals in STEM, and the challenges they are working to overcome. Reflecting on the key takeaways that I saw across the Fab Five, a few themes stood out: discovery of their direction, the impact of role models, and the power of camaraderie.


Discovery of Their Direction

Each of the Fab Five are in the early stages of their career with many things yet to discover about themselves and the STEM industries. I spoke to each of them at the start of the week about what they did and their passions in STEM, and it seemed like they were all at the beginning of a new chapter.

Over the week it was clear that the conference sessions, the women they met, and the general atmosphere began to focus their thoughts so they could hone in on where they wanted to take their careers, what impact they could make, and where their passions could intersect with technology.

Many of the speakers’ career journeys ebbed and flowed through different industries and seemingly unrelated roles; however, each eventually landed themselves in a career where they are thriving and making true impact. To demonstrate, in one panel a speaker started as a harp player and eventually became a GitHub lawyer!

These stories of personal discovery from incredibly successful women and real-life role models reassure those with unanswered questions about their career direction that they are on the right track.

One of my favorite things that Akua, a Makers bootcamp graduate, said to me was that she was learning to appreciate her journey. Over the week, I saw her embrace her bootcamp education more and realize that her unique perspective is an enormous asset to her team at Lyst where she is now a software engineer!

In Hadiyah and Vanessa, who do not come from computer science backgrounds but are instead maths students, I saw two things: a new awareness of the career possibilities that are open to their degree and an increased interest in the intersection of technology and maths.

While many people are not exposed to programming before university, women have an additional societal barrier for them to overcome to pursue computer science. In my network, many female software engineers transitioned from other industries into technology after they were finally exposed to programming because it appealed to their interests in making large scale impact, love of being creative, and opportunity to problem solve.

The Grace Hopper sessions and careers fair revealed the variety of careers that are available for not just computer science students, but students from all backgrounds and particularly those studying other STEM subjects. Each of the Fab Five left with a greater understanding of their career options and what skills they needed to be successful in them.

Beyond uncovering new career opportunities, the Grace Hopper Conference also fed the Fab Fives technical interests. Ayushi, a degree apprentice at KPMG and Queen Mary University, packed her itinerary with cyber security content. When speaking to her at the end of the day about her sessions, you could feel the excitement and passion for security technology radiating from her.

Continuing along a similar thread, Becky and I had really interesting conversations about the types of technology that interest her. We spoke about her personal life, the challenges of those around her, and what kind of impact she wants to have on the world.

After speaking about Jhillika Kumar, the Anita B Student of Vision winner, on her work that increases employment opportunities for those on the autism spectrum, Becky began to explore the technologies that were personal and relevant to her and those close to her. She identified that she has a strong interest in AI and how we can use technology to build a more inclusive world, particularly for the neurodiverse.

Grace Hopper was an investment into the Fab Five’s technical education and encouraged each of them to continue learning about subjects that fascinate them.


The Impact of Role Models

This year the Grace Hopper Conference was packed with 26,000 women in technology – that scale of female tech talent all in one place is unheard outside of this event. Amongst the many thousands of women in tech, there were countless role models for the Fab Five and the other attendees. Many of the Fab Five expressed to me how they finally found role models that looked like them and were interested in the same technologies. They learnt from their role model’s industry experiences and applied these lessons to their own careers.

However, the impact of these role models didn’t stop there. The Fab Five left Grace Hopper motivated and inspired to continue sharing their stories and to become role models themselves.

This year Akua created Anomalys Views, a platform where she shares her educational experiences and lessons on resilience. Vanessa has also created the blog Vanessa Speaks where she documents her journey to make STEM subjects seem less intimidating, as well as she started Project Insight where she shares the stories of other women in STEM and provide insight into how to enter STEM careers.

This year Akua created Anomalys Views, a platform where she shares her educational experiences and lessons on resilience. Vanessa has also created the blog Vanessa Speaks where she documents her journey to make STEM subjects seem less intimidating, as well as she started Project Insight where she shares the stories of other women in STEM and provide insight into how to enter STEM careers.

As Akua learnt from an inspiring women in STEM, “you have to be the one who shouts about you the loudest”, meaning you need to share your story and make your message heard.

Their stories about how they endeavoured for greatness and pushed through barriers helps to inspire and empower the next set of women to join the industry. Having a familiar face to look up to makes a huge impact on people and can dramatically change the course of people’s lives. They uplift others just as they have been uplifted themselves. These role models encourage others to create impact with their new skills and to dream big.


Power in Camaraderie

What made the Student to STEMette Grace Hopper trip so impactful was the camaraderie that was built between the Fab Five. At the start of the trip, these young women were acquaintances. They had met a couple times previously, but they had a lot to learn about and from each other. Over the week, they shared their stories, found common interests, created memories that will last a lifetime, and became a tech girl gang who will forever uplift each other.

They helped each other with confidence issues, encouraged each other to make progress towards their goals, and drew inspiration from each other. The Fab Five and I now have plans to start a Working Out Loud peer support group to hold ourselves accountable for our goals that have arisen from the Grace Hopper Conference.

The magic of Grace Hopper did not end when the plane landed back in London; the true impact of Grace Hopper will become apparent in the coming years as the Fab Five keep pushing for progress with the support of each other. They started as strangers but left as sisters.

After a week of being in each other’s company amongst thousands of women at Grace Hopper, the evolution of the Fab Five was phenomenal. Providing these young women with the opportunity to attend GHC came, at what I believe, was a really important time for each of them. This trip provided guidance and direction to their plans that will shape the trajectory of their future.

It was an honor to hear their stories and watch them grow as women in STEM. Attending as a group was fundamental to this change and I honestly believe that they will be lifelong friends who will cherish these memories forever. A huge thanks is owed to the STEMettes and Deutsche Bank for providing them and myself with the opportunity to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration.

We will all look back onto this week in October 2019 as one that changed our lives.

Representation drops even further when considering the intersection between minority groups in tech, such as women of color, LGBTQIA+ women, and non-binary people.

Building diverse and inclusive workforces is important for individuals and businesses. Research shows that diverse teams across all industries are more creative, experimental, and productive and are better at meeting deadlines and staying under budget. Also, when women are in upper management, financial performance improves.  

 Each woman’s story on how she enters a STEM subject (science, technology, engineering, or math) will be unique. As a trailblazer, there will be self-doubt and discrimination, but also triumph, strength, and the opportunity to have a profound impact on others.

How we begin to unlock these journeys – and the undeniable benefits of a diverse workforce and an empowered society – starts with increasing access to technology and creating new opportunities. Both tasks must be underpinned by a strong community.  

Community cultivates a culture of acceptance and inclusion. Bringing women together sparks conversations that break down the stereotype that tech is “just for boys”. By making the industry more welcoming and approachable to beginners, we can start to successfully expose more minority groups to the technology industry.  

Considering my own situation, I was lucky to have a family that encouraged my technical explorations and pursuit of computer science at university. However, I kept my interests in technology somewhat hidden from my friends because it was not a topic that girls were commonly interested in.  

During my university studies, I finally found my first female friends who loved technology. There were only a handful of women studying computer science, so we soon developed a supportive community in each other. Notably, it was through them and other female role models that I started to recognize the importance of connecting women in STEM, and inspired me to start advocating for women in tech.

A Microsoft study found that as girls get older their interest in technology careers drops. By the time girls are in university, 58% think that programming is “not for them”. However, girls who know a woman working in a STEM field are nearly 20% more likely to feel empowered by STEM activities – strongly indicating that the power of female role models and communities is quantifiable. 


Change Is Coming 

Societal barriers are being broken down and doors gradually opened to women in tech. Organizations are striving to create an industry that is representative of the world, not just the privileged few.  

To tackle low female representation in tech, organizations are providing free programming training, guidance on making career shifts into tech, developing mentor/mentee relationships, and are increasing the visibility of female role-models. The most impactful organizations are fostering community alongside their offerings.  

A sense of belonging in tech is developed by building both individual confidence and collective confidence or feelings of group inclusion. Individual confidence is often derived from upskilling and the proving of capabilities to oneself, thereby overcoming harmful gender stereotypes. 

Collective confidence grows through discovering a community that makes one feel valued and included. The power of community should not be underestimated. It has the capability to transform minds and instigate dramatic change.  

Community groups are needed throughout the entire career pipeline to attract and retain women at different career stages and age ranges by addressing the evolving challenges at each stage of being a woman in tech.  

Let me highlight several of my favorite programs:

The STEMettes, created by Dr. Anne-Marie Imafidon, targets girls in elementary and middle schools to introduce them to STEM subjects through hackathons, panel events, exhibitions, and school trips. They also work with high school and university students to support them through their studies and deliver opportunities for growth.  

The STEMettes connect young women to fantastic female role models through their Students to STEMettes mentorship scheme, introduces girls to technical subjects in an approachable and creative way, and unlocks opportunities many girls would have never imagined having, for example the chance to win an all-expenses paid trip to the Grace Hopper Conference, the largest female computing conference in the world.

Code First: Girls is a life-changing community which provides free coding classes to 18-23-year-old women and female or non-binary current or recently graduated students. They have taught over 10,000 women to code and aim to teach 20,000 women by 2020.  

CF: G empowers and inspires their community to use technology as a mechanism to pursue and achieve their dreams regardless of educational background. They unlock doors previously closed to many women and provide their community a platform to inspire others through speaking engagements, unique events, and interviews. 

Women@Microsoft, an internal Microsoft community, aims to help existing women in tech thrive. This is accomplished by spreading knowledge about technical advancements, sharing tailored career advice, and developing mutually beneficial relationships amongst employees. This work is proving crucial to improving retention of existing women in tech.

Each of these organizations helps build women’s individual confidence and skills by providing training, but they crucially also build collective confidence by creating a strong community – this is what makes them effective in changing lives.  


Self-Perpetuating Growth 

The beauty of communities like those highlighted previously is that they can transform into collaborative friendships that continuously uplift their members. Their power is compounded by the inclusion of others, and the achievements of each person. They are networks of ambitious women who are constantly striving to improve themselves and the lives of others.

A community founded on altruistic goals often finds that altruism becomes part of the group’s culture. Many of the women who are part of these communities have gone on to help others find success or develop solutions to problems with which they have personal experience. These communities encourage each other to create impact with their new skills and to dream big.  

Eventually the girls who previously sought out role models become role models themselves. Their stories about how they endeavoured for greatness and pushed through barriers then empower the next set of women to join the community. They uplift others just as they have been uplifted themselves.  

The message that community is crucial to building a gender-balanced industry can be applied on a wider scale to build industries with diversity in ethnicity, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, religion, age, and physical abilities.  

Community creates a self-perpetuating growth of inclusion and fosters positive global change. 


Moving Towards Equality 

The UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 focuses on achieving gender equality and empowerment for all women and girls. Some targets focus on using technology to promote the empowerment of women and ensuring women have full, effective, and equal opportunities to rise to leadership positions so they can participate in “decision making in political, economic, and public life”.  

Technology is one of the world’s most powerful industries. It is changing every region of the world and every industry. With technical jobs that pay 36% more than the national average in the UK increasing in demand at twice the speed of non-digital jobs, actions need to be taken to ensure the entire population has access to self-fulfilling, well paid jobs where they can be decision makers in key global industries. The importance of technology being created with everyone in mind becomes critical as it increases its influence on people’s personal and professional lives. 

By breaking down the barriers that hold women back from pursuing technical subjects, we begin to build confidence, which leads to bolder action and growth. This growth unlocks new gifts and talents that many women would not imagine they have. As women embrace their gifts, they discover their power; a woman with power gains her voice; and a woman who gains her voice is an unstoppable force for positive impact on the world. 

Community kicks off that process by building a network of support which lessens feelings of being an outsider and replaces it with acceptance and love.

We live their hopes and dreams for the future. For women, we live the dreams of our foremothers like the suffragettes and the millions of hidden women who changed the world. We are manifestations of their dreams every day we go to work, every time we vote, and through every independent decision we make about the lives that we live.  

Community formed the backbone of so many activist movements that got us to where we are today. We all must be a part of the collective effort to uplift those around us so that our futures and the futures of others are brighter and more fulfilling.

It feels like it was just yesterday that I walked into Microsoft’s Lift London office and crossed off day one of my career. This early-in-career checkpoint left me feeling reflective about the growth I have experienced and the lessons I have learnt.


Team Fit is Irreplaceable

Let’s take a step back first. My real first six months at Microsoft I finished back in January 2017 when I was a placement student at Lift working on Paint 3D. I had an amazing team who taught me more about the technology industry, the world of business, and technical expertise in the year that I spent with them than any lecture or online class could. I finished my placement year and subsequent internship on the Xbox team feeling confident in my abilities and ready to start my full-time career.

My 15 months as an intern meant my transition to re-join Microsoft after completing my computing undergrad was seamless. I instantly had a connection with the team, was comfortable asking questions, and felt like I belonged. A major reason I wanted to work with the Lift team again post-university was because of the team fit. Our team is wildly clever, places critical importance on quality, and strives for impactful innovation — traits I hold in very high esteem.

Surrounding yourself by people who you can learn from is of the utmost importance, particularly for a new engineer. The classic phrase “If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room” is so true, because otherwise you’ll begin to stagnate.

The Microsoft Lift London Team

Beyond working traits, my team feels like family. I look forward to seeing them every day, sharing stories, hearing their perspectives, and laughing at the most absurdly random topics. Our team fit, driven by meaningful relationships, makes me an enthusiastic employee who wants to tackle challenging, unanswered questions in the emerging virtual assistant space.

Team fit is created on both sides of the hiring table and discovering what kind of team fit suits your unique needs and wants is a personal journey. You produce the best work if you are surrounded by people who complement, motivate, and inspire you.


Discover your (Evolving) Motivations

True, long-lasting motivation comes from within. It is created by your passions, values, and dreams. When I first started pursuing technology, working in the video games industry was my goal. I grew up playing games and wanted to create the games that shaped me.

Over the years, as I was learning about other technologies and was gaining experience, my motivations evolved — as they should! Working on Paint 3D and Xbox taught me that I love working on user-facing products that bring fun and creativity to others.

Building on those revelations, the combination of working on Paint 3D and Cortana helped me tune into the joy and adventure of working on cutting-edge technologies that introduce additional challenges of solving unanswered questions like “How can we make 3D creation easy for anyone between the ages of 4 and 104?” and “How can we provide the best experience and most value in the new voice-enabled world?”.

Experience across three very different global products taught me what made my heart sing; pursuing innovation, pushing boundaries in new human-computer interaction spaces, the ability to enhance the lives of others around the world.

This discovery freed me from the small box that I put myself in where I thought I would only be happy or find success working in the games industry.


Seek Communities Outside Your Day Job

The women in STEM community brings me a sense of fulfilment that I cannot find solely in programming. Crucially, it combines my engineering skills, life experience, and my desire to make the world a better place.

During my placement year, I was fortunate to have a mentor, Linden, who fuelled my fire to bring equality and gender balance to the technology industry. Since then, female empowerment and activism has been at my core.

Once I went back to university to finish my undergrad, I was elected the VP of the Computing Society to use it as a platform for change. My efforts focused on increasing industry connections for all Surrey students and providing female students strong role-models, a powerful network, and career advice on how to succeed in male-dominated industries.

My work continues at Microsoft. Coincidentally, this week also marks International Women’s Day and the culmination of weeks of work organizing an inspiring technology showcase developed by the engineering teams in London incl. HoloLens, Paint 3D, and SwiftKey to show to 50 year eight girls during a DigiGirlz day.

DigiGirlz, a Microsoft organization, aims to inspire future female technologists by introducing them to Microsoft employees and workspaces, getting them hands-on with the latest technology, and challenging them to #CreateWhatsNext during a hackathon centered around making the world a more accessible place. Throughout the day I wore many hats — hackathon helper, mentor, judge, and co-organizer.

I was exhausted by the end, but absolutely thrilled with the results. The girls left feeling empowered to pursue technology with a greater understanding of how they can integrate programming skills into their individual passions.

These additional communities introduce you to people that otherwise may be out of reach.

External communities unlock a network united by shared interests that can be tapped into to accelerate your career and altruistic goals.

I have met so many incredible female leaders and have had countless career opportunities stem from my advocacy work.

The 2019 DigiGirlz Organizers

Satya Nadella wrote in his book Hit Refresh — Employee Edition that we should use Microsoft as a platform to change the world and create impact. We are all dynamic people with interests beyond our day jobs. Find a way to combine your skills, create positive change, and live a more fulfilled life.


Lock into Your USP

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve been given is to find gaps in your team’s skills and fill it. Make it your USP. Not only does it push you to learn new skills, but it also makes you an invaluable member of the team.

For me, this comes in the form of Windows UI development done in XAML. For those who have written in XAML before, you know that it can be a bit of a beast. There is a lot to learn with different quirks and “magic” that can make it hard to fully understand.

There are other amazing XAML developers team members, but as their careers have progressed, they no longer have the time to develop as much. Others find it too complicated or just outside their realm of interest. Conversely, I enjoy the challenge of XAML and developing front-facing code, so this skill appeals to my technology sub-interests.

It is a perfect opportunity to seize a skill gap and fill it whilst using the other XAML developer’s experience to enhance and increase the pace of my learnings. Note that this does not mean limiting yourself to just this skill. The intention is to grow your skills into these needed areas.

Expertise brings respect and career growth opportunities. Identify a cross-section between the technologies you love and the skills your team needs.

Taking a moment to self-reflect helped me appreciate my growth in the last six months. I look forward to the next six months of learnings leading up to my 1-year anniversary at Microsoft.
